In 1982, the Region of Murcia became one of the 17 Autonomous Communities of Spain. Situated on the Mediterranean coast between Andalusia and Valencia, the region covers an area of 11,317 square kilometers and has a population of 1.4 million. One-third of the entire population lives in the capital city, Murcia.
